RV: Day One

The plan for Day One: pickup up the RV and drive to a campsite near Niagara Falls. We couldn't pickup the RV until noon in Middleton, NJ, so we planned on a long day and a late arrival to camp.

We rented the RV from a place called RoadBear. We got the 19"-22" one. Here is a link to the RV. I was totally impressed with what we got -- a 2017 RV with about 10,000 miles on it. Looks just like the pictures on the website. Although its the smallest RV we could rent, it has PLENTY of space. I imagine, coming from a NYC apartment helps me see it as luxuriously large.

The kids love it. Fay immediately camped out in the bed in the back to read her books and Rex worked on his legos on the table.

Driving the RV took some getting used to. You have to rely on your mirrors A LOT. But most of the drive was on straight wide interstates, so once you get up to speed, its pretty easy cruising.  Ryan and I split the driving 1/2 and 1/2. When I wasn't driving, it was pretty nice to be able to hang out in the back with the kids.

About 1/2 way through our first leg, we discovered some technical difficulties with the planned wifi situation, so we stopped at a Walmart. Its a bit weird for me, to shop at a Walmart...always seems so far removed from our NYC lives. But, I suppose, on an RV trip its par for the course. To top off the experience, I also got a Coke.  If the meals and drinks on the fist day are any indication, I'm a bit afraid for what we will be eating on this trip. Yesterday, I had two sodas (I typically never drink soda), and we stopped for a fast food dinner. Today's priority will be a grocery run!

Anyway, we arrived at Four Mile Creek State Campground around 9pm and our reserved campsite was taken. This was a bit disappointing, because I reserved the campsite 4 months ago. And I chose one that was closes to the lake, with no one in front of us. The office was closed when we arrived, so the sign said to take any site that was not occupied or on the reserved list. We were on the list, but someone took ours anyway. We will probably try to move over there for our second night. We are only here for the two nights.

The campground is beautiful. Lots of other RVs, but very peaceful. First thing this morning, Rex and I took a walk down to Lake Ontario and put our toes in the water.

Today, we are skipping Niagara Falls so we can see it when Nana (my mom) and Mimi arrive tomorrow. Instead we will head to the Lockport Cave and Underground Boat ride. And of course,  trip to the grocery store!
