Summer 2016 RV Road Trip

On July 6th we will be taking a 2 1/2 week RV trip. We will be traveling to Minneapolis and back, stopping to camp on the great lakes along the way. I've never traveled in an RV before, nor has Ryan. And I did not grow up with very many road trips, so I am excited to see what this trip will be like for me, for my marriage and for the kids. Fay is 8 and Rex is 6. Both kids will not be allowed to bring their devices on the trip, which may seem counter-intuitive for long rides stuck in the car. But I am confident the kids will realize there are other things more interesting to occupy their time. I'm starting this blog to share our trip with family and friends, and to keep a memory log for myself. Here goes.

This is a map of our trip. The blue line is the route towards Minneapolis, and the red line is the route home, towards NYC. Here's the breakdown:

Our Route:

  1. Drive to Niagara Falls, stay on the banks of Lake Ontario. Meet up with mom and sis!
  2. Drive to Rochester, NY for an amazing Lowe Family Reunion (2 nights)
  3. Drive allllll the way to Warren Dunes State Park on Lake Michigan (2 nights)
  4. Drive to House on the Rock (weird kitschy tourist attraction), on our way to Wisconsin Dells (2 nights)
  5. Drive to Minneapolis! Visit family and friends. Show the kids and Ryan how beautiful Minneapolis is in the summer ( I think they've only been in the winter for Xmas or Thanksgiving) (3 nights)
  6. START TRIP BACK. Drive to the banks of Lake Michigan just north of Chicago (Illinois Beach State Park). Spend a day at Six Flags with Ryan's cousin and her kids. (2 nights)
  7. Drive to Sandusky Ohio. Staying on Huron River near Lake Erie (only 1 night :/ )
  8. Drive to Delaware Water Gap, do a little camping and canoeing (2 nights).
  9. Drive home to NYC!
Thats the plan. Basically alternating one day of driving with one day of playing....with some extra time devoted to family in Rochester and Minneapolis. Stay tuned!

  1. Sounds Amazing! Forget the images of "Family Vacation" and Chevy Chase and know that you will be creating stories for the rest of Faye and Rex's lives. Bravo.

  2. Even though we did not take many road trips, one we did take was to the House on the Rock. I hope you enjoy it with your family as much as we did with you and Mimi.

  3. I have to admire you with taking away all mobile devices for the trip. The kids at first will be upset and furious, but they are about to have a trip they will remember and love for a lifetime. Get them some disposable cameras they can use to document the trip and upload to their phones later!
